Hemp Seed Banana Bread

Hemp seeds: I put that sh*t on everything.

Banana bread is one of those baked goods that reads *healthy*. In reality, it is a disguise for sugar and refined carbs. But you can make it healthier and still taste AMAZING! Here are some simple suggestions to make your family-favourite recipe healthier:

Step 1: Cut wayyyyy back on the sugar. Recipe calls for 1 cup? Try 1/3 cup. Bananas are naturally sweet! 

Step 2: Mix and match your flour. This is where it gets a bit tricky as white flour is more binding than other flours. Experiment by swapping out half the flour for whole wheat or a gluten-free brown rice flour. You may need to add a little xanthan gum if you use a completely GF flour mix. 

Step 3: Add 1/2 cup of hemp seeds/hearts for a boost of protein and omega fatty acids. You can also add flax seed for additional nutritional benefit. 

Word on the street is that my version has just the right amount of sweetness and an out of this world texture. 

Hemp Seed Banana Bread

  • 3 bananas (can be defrosted and mashed)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 egg (try a flax egg
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 cup flour (I used a mix of white flour, brown rice flour and 1 tsp. xanthan gum)
  • 1/3 cup melted butter (use a vegan alternative, if you like!)
  • 1/2 cup hemp seeds

Mash bananas and add sugar plus beaten egg. Stir in cooled melted butter. All at once, add the dry ingredients. Bake at 375F for 20-25 minutes.
