My 5 Must-Have Hair Products

My 5 Must-Have Hair Products

Some days are a bit of a hairy situation…

NOT meaning that I’m covered with hair ... well, unless you count all the ones that fall off my head (How do they get EVERYWHERE?), but some days my hair just won’t cooperate. As much as I hate to admit it, a bad hair day hurts my ego a bit. It’s ok to be a little vain!

(PS – If you’re super hairy, no judgment! You do you! I support any and all hair removal, non-removal options and hairstyles out there ❤)

Back to bad hair days, since I’ve found these five products, my messy bun days have decreased, I’ve spent less time styling my hair and I’ve had more fun! Somehow doing less with my hair has equaled better hair days. I’m still on the hunt for a favourite shampoo/conditioner since I’ve started colouring my hair again, and going blonder each time (My initial reaction: YIKES! Final reaction: MORE BLONDE PLEASE!), but through each cut and colour, these five products have stuck by me.

Shout out to Ashley at Hedkandi Hotel Arts for showing me how colour and cut can make a big difference too!

Now onto to why I love the products! (This is NOT a sponsored post).

Bumble and bumble. Don’t Blow It (H)Air Styler

A few years ago I started to embrace my hair’s natural texture and let it air-dry. Once I had a hair cut in place that helped increase the uniformity of my waves (Which in my case meant blunt ends, less layers), the only area I still needed help in was keeping the waves intact and cutting down on frizz. Enter B&B’s Don’t Blow it (H)air Styler. I use a quarter-sized amount on towel-dried hair and rub it on my hands like a hand cream. Then I glide it through my hair, mid-shaft to ends first, then to the roots and lightly scrunch it in. The key here is to get the product in but touch it as little as possible. I find the more I touch my hair, the frizzier it gets. What I love about this product is that you can’t feel it in your hair, it cuts down on frizz and helps define my waves.

Bumble and bumble. Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer

When I started curling my hair on a regular basis, I knew I needed to introduce a heat protectant into my hair care routine. I’m not going to lie, I was hesitant at first because the products I tried in the past left my hair feeling heavy and oily. So why did I choose a heat/UV protectant with the word OIL in it? Because it worked! I received a sample from Sephora and was surprised by how non-oily the product actually was. It’s so lightweight, I don’t have to worry about over-doing it or waking up the next morning with zits because my hair product clogged my pores. Working on dry hair, I spritz 3-4 pumps of this spray into my palms and glide it down my hair from mid-shaft to tip, finger-combing as I go. Whatever is left on my hands gets a quick rub through my roots and I’m good to curl my hair. If a day or two later I need to calm my frizz, a spritz of this will do the trick.

Bumble and bumble. Thickening Dryspun Finish

I can remember the day I discovered Dryspun. My hairstylist at the time finished my style with it and I was instantly in love. My long hair was falling flat more often than not and I needed a product that was going to keep my air-dried waves high to the sky. What’s great about Dryspun is that it acts as a bit of a hairspray to keep your style intact, and that anytime you need a boost, all you have to do is give your hair a little tousle and it reactivates! My stylist now also gave me a great tip: If you need even more volume, spray it in, wait a few minutes and then give your hair a quick blast with a hair dryer. The heat and Dryspun together will make your hair even more full and voluminous!

drybar Triple Sec

What I love most about drybar’s Triple Sec is that it is a 3 in 1 product: It’s a dry shampoo, texturizer and volumizer. All three things I need in a hair product! However, I mostly use Triple Sec as a texturizer. The way it separates my waves adds a bit of bounce and allows for a ton of movement (with some hold). It makes this product a winner in my books. Plus, unlike a lot of texturizers, it isn’t gritty or heavy. I keep this product in my bag for quick touch-ups and for travel when I can’t bring my whole arsenal along!

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

Confession: I keep two bottles of Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo on hand at all times. I love it THAT MUCH. Seriously, I couldn’t handle running out one day and not having another bottle ready to go. This dry shampoo has been a game-changer for me. Just like you, I have tried numerous dry shampoos — the classics, the newbies, the cheapies. But I stopped trying new dry shampoos after I found this one. Why? It barely leaves any residue (If it does, you’ve applied a lot, so wait a minute, then work it in. It will disappear!). It doesn’t make my hair look like I used dry shampoo that day (You know what I’m talking about!). It’s light and actually cleans your hair instead of absorbing the oils and leaving the residue on your scalp. The day after using it, I don’t feel like I need to wash it out. In fact, one application usually lasts a day or two for me. This might be the one product I take to a desert island!

PS - I buy all my products at Sephora

Here’s my weekly hair routine. Depending on events/travel, it does vary. My main goals are to keep shampooing down to twice a week and heat-style only two to three days. Sunday nights, I often throw a mask in my hair if I’m having a bath too. This is just where my hair finds its happy place.
